This is where I blog about Recovery, particularly from two things: Depression and Fundamentalism. I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression in the year 2000. I learned then it is not just a mental but a physical condition. If religion and spirituality are an important part of your life, that is a crucial distinction. I always thought religion, my relationship with God, prayer, and Bible study should be enough to cope with depression. That diagnosis showed me it was not. I did not abandon my faith, but I learned it is okay to add other sources of help, like counseling and medication.

For some people, issues of depression and religion are intertwined. When navigating those issues, here are four key principles I adhere to:

  1. God is for your recovery and healing, not against it (Isa 53:3-5).
  2. God will not kick you when you’re down (Isa 42:2-3).
  3. Some churches and spiritual philosophies are good for recovery, and some are bad. Make sure you know the difference.
  4. With the right help – spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, and perhaps medically – you can live a happy and fulfilling life. You just need to learn how to stop Depression from sabotaging it.

Where does that name come from?

Fawns of Naphtali comes from Jacob’s blessing to his son Naphtali (Genesis 49.21). The Hebrew text can be translated two ways:

Naphtali is a doe let loose that bears lovely fawns (Gen 49:21 NRS).

“Naphtali is a doe let loose, He gives beautiful words (Gen 49:21 NAU).

And the name Naphtali means “My wrestling” (Gen 30:8). My words come from wrestling with divine and human beings (Gen 32:25-28). So my fawns are my beautiful words. That’s actually wishful thinking, not bragging.
